羅伯特.勞森伯格(Robert Rauschenberg)

 



Throughout her creative career, she collaborated with other well-known artists such as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers, composer John Cage, and architect Mario Botta, as well as dozens of less-known artists and craftspersons.



凱吉不但是作曲家,也是作家和哲學家,他的影響力遠遠超出了音樂的領域。五十多年前他在美國西雅圖的康尼西藝術學院和後來成爲美國本世紀最偉大的編舞家之一的模斯.康寧漢(Merce Cunningham)成爲同學後,便開始對康寧漢舞蹈學派的形成產生重要影響。他鼓勵康寧漢在紐約成立了舞團,自己擔任音樂指導,並參與了幾乎所有康寧漢傳世之作的創作和演出。凱吉的創作觀念不但還影響了他的好友們如傑出的現代藝術家傑斯伯.强斯(Jers-per Johns)、羅伯特.勞森伯格(Robert Rauschenberg),更啓發了好幾代的表演藝術家和歐美及亞洲的年輕作曲家。約翰.凱吉一九一二年九月五日生於洛杉磯,曾隨「十二音無調性音樂」的鼻祖荀伯格(Arnold Schoen-berg)做學生,但荀伯格從不認爲凱吉是個作曲家,而稱他爲「天才的發明家」(凱吉自己常引此爲榮)。年輕的凱吉當時很窮,没錢繳學費,但荀伯格還是免費收了他,只要凱吉發誓終生奉獻音樂。凱吉答應了,並一生勤奮、多產,直到他去世前幾分鐘還在寫作,他的書桌上仍遺留著爲奧地利國家廣播電台没有寫完的管絃樂手稿《58》。

但我不確定勞森伯格是否會將此視為批評。他全心投入當下的可能性,這體現了他十足的美國式精神,而且令人驚訝地沒有一絲委屈或沮喪。在21世紀,他仍然是一位備受推崇的人物,因為他賦予了一代又一代年輕藝術家以新的方式思考藝術的自由,不再將其視為繪畫技巧或內心折磨的表達,而是一個充滿樂趣的過程,始於你停下來,去關注這個世界上那些具體事物,包括文字。祝你節日快樂,勞森伯格先生。
But I’m not sure that Rauschenberg would regard this as a criticism. He was totally American in his devotion to the possibilities of the present moment, and remarkably free of grievance or depression. He remains a celebrated figure in the 21st century because he gave license to succeeding generations of young artists to think about art in a new way, not as an expression of draftsmanly skill or inner torment, but rather as a playful process that begins when you pause to notice the concrete things that fill this world, words included.
