Hans Christian Andersen died 145 years ago today. The creator of the
"little mermaid" actually let his heroine end up as sea foam, instead of a happy ending with her prince as many of us know from the Disney version. Many of the Danish storyteller's stories do not have happy endings, but even his darkest fairy tales have a very special magic.

Hans Christian Andersen, the writer of some of the world's best-loved fairy tales, died #OTD in 1875. He gained a reputation as a poet and novelist before his talent found its true expression. His humorous, delicate but frequently melancholic stories, were first published in 1835. They include “The Ugly Duckling”, “The Little Mermaid”, “The Little Match Girl” and “The Emperor's New Clothes”.
