The Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris is dedicating a new exhibition to Marguerite Duthuit Matisse, the illegitimate daughter of Henri Matisse, who was his most frequent model. Born in 1894 during Matisse’s relationship with Caroline Joblau, Marguerite was recognized by her father and raised alongside his later children. Despite fragile health following a childhood tracheotomy, she joined the French resistance, was tortured by the Gestapo, and narrowly escaped deportation.
Matisse painted her throughout his career, often depicting her in high-neck blouses or scarves covering her scar. The exhibition, opening in April, will showcase over 110 works—including paintings, drawings, sculptures, and ceramics—many from private collections. Marguerite became her father’s assistant and agent, overseeing his engravings, exhibitions, and archives until her death in 1982 at age 87.

"Let's play to God for those whose are broke!
Let's play to God for those who've not a bean!"

What we’re watching: The BBC’s “Swan Lake Bath Ballet.” Dan Saltzstein, our deputy editor for Special Sections, writes: “Twenty-seven elite dancers perform the ballet from their home baths. Cool, weird and, oh yeah, they are hot.”
