Harold Wallace Ross (November 6, 1892 – December 6, 1951) was an American journalist who co-founded The New Yorker magazine in 1925 with his wife Jane Grant, and was its editor-in-chief until his death.

The New Yorker celebrates its centenary this month, an extraordinary moment that we’ve been anticipating for some time. It’s been one hundred years since our founding editor, Harold Ross, and his wife, Jane Grant, dreamed up what they called a “comic paper” over poker games and liquid lunches at the Algonquin Hotel and other midtown haunts. The 100th Anniversary Issue is available in full today exclusively to our subscribers. In it, I’ve written about the history of the magazine, from its inauspicious beginnings, when the whole thing nearly folded because of a disastrous night at the card table, to its emergence as an ineffable blend of humor, art, deep reporting, critical essays, poetry, and fiction.

We’ve published this issue with six covers, each featuring a different interpretation of Eustace Tilley, the iconic character who appeared on the very first issue, in 1925. Inside, we have Lawrence Wright on an order of nuns who visit women on death row, Burkhard Bilger on American marching bands, and Jill Lepore on the letters of New Yorker writers and editors. Plus, Kelefa Sanneh on Mike White, the creator of “The White Lotus”; Nick Paumgarten on the flight of the bald ibis; a moving new essay from the author of “Educated,” Tara Westover; and Adam Gopnik on the relationship between Ernest Hemingway and Lillian Ross, the New Yorker reporter who wrote what seemed to many readers to be an excoriating Profile of the famous author. I’m also thrilled at the launch of an ambitious new series called “Takes”—short pieces by our writers and others on the New Yorker stories that changed their lives, which we’ll be publishing throughout the year.
This is the first of four issues dedicated to the centenary that we’ll publish over the course of the year, but our celebration goes far beyond the magazine itself. Online, you’ll find a single home for all things relating to the anniversary. It’s a place to learn about the magazine’s founding editors, writers, and artists; explore specially curated story collections; watch master classes on the art of making the magazine; peruse ongoing and upcoming events celebrating the past hundred years; and shop for special merchandise. I’m also thrilled that we are in the process of digitizing The New Yorker’s complete archive, a project that will transform thousands of our back issues into searchable articles.
There will be many exciting in-person events and other special celebrations in the months ahead, which we will keep you informed of, but I’m especially looking forward to the release of a documentary film on the magazine, directed by the Academy Award winner Marshall Curry, which is set to première later this year on Netflix; a major exhibition at the New York Public Library; and the publication of two new anthologies: “A Century of Fiction in The New Yorker” and “A Century of Poetry in The New Yorker.”
