ITALY RECOVERS PRICELESS ETRUSCAN TREASURES LOOTED BY TOMB RAIDERS
Italian authorities have reclaimed extraordinary artefacts dating back to the 3rd century B.C., looted from an ancient Etruscan necropolis in Umbria. The discovery was made by two amateur landowners who stumbled upon burial chambers while excavating their property near Città della Pieve, roughly 150 kilometres north of Rome.

ROME, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Italian authorities have recovered precious 3rd century B.C. artefacts from an Etruscan necropolis looted by a couple of bungling tomb raiders in Umbria who stumbled across the haul on their land.
The Etruscans flourished in central Italy around 2,500 years ago but were gradually assimilated into the Roman empire. They left behind lavish tombs, pottery and statues but tantalisingly few written documents and patchy evidence of their daily lives.

The Etruscan Sarcophagus called the Amazons because it shows the fight between the Greeks and the famous women warriors, found in Tarquinia in 1869, is a true and rare work of art from the past that has reached us. Made of marble around 350-325 BC, probably of Magna Graecia production, as demonstrated by the white calcareous alabaster stone, of a type that does not exist in Etruria, the high pictorial quality of the decoration that has no comparison in the Etruscan context, and seems to lead back to a context of Tarantine painting, in addition to some small details of Italic tradition of Magna Graecia, such as for example the horse trappings, it is now located at the National Archaeological Museum of Florence.
The sarcophagus reproduces the shapes of a small temple, with the four sides decorated with paintings. The lid was perhaps made in Etruria, as the bas-reliefs on the lateral pediments with the myth of Actaeon torn to pieces by dogs, typical of the Etruscan world, seem to suggest. The central acroterion, which is in the shape of a protruding head, also finds confirmation in Etruscan production.
There are two inscriptions in the Etruscan language on the sarcophagus: a large one on the slope of the lid reports the name of the deceased "Ramtha Huzcnai", the other also bears the name with a few additions and is found on one of the long sides of the case. To make them, the Etruscan scribe did not bother to engrave the paintings.
The four sides of the sarcophagus are decorated with paintings in bright and vivid colors, of Amazonomachy, an iconographic theme of Greek art consisting in the representation of the conflict between the Greeks and the Amazons, a people of warrior women in Greek mythology.
