節氣大寒，大里菩薩寺門口兩層樓高的梅花盛放，一縷一縷幽香沁鼻。
菩薩寺是台灣街市的奇蹟。緊靠車輛頻繁的街道，最世俗的透天販厝。被改建成為最幽靜、最雅緻，最有生活品質的信仰之地。
梅花迎客，石板小路曲折，水塘清淺，游魚自在。偶然聽到鐘聲，空無一物的房舍。
沒有外牆，沒有樓板，一株高大櫸木，枝葉扶疏，樹影婆娑，如夢幻泡影，直上天空。
高野山空海金堂，也是空無一物，只見空窗外一帶松林。
諸相非相，可以在生活裡示現。
「應云何住？云何降伏其心？」
微塵紛擾，心可以靜定。
許久未見慧光師父，他多年在尼泊爾，建立國際知名慈善場域，收養大地震後失家孤兒，輔導學童讀書、種咖啡、畫唐卡、抄經，度人無數。
偶一回頭，師父靜坐在維摩舍素樸禪室，微光如晨曦，有緣如此，留下了這張安靜的照片。

暈眩，幾乎痛苦的閱讀經驗。
薄薄一本，一百多頁，2024年布克獎得主。當時看到shortlist，名單上我讀過兩本：James跟The Safekeep，我都很喜歡，心裡覺得應該是James得大獎。宣布結果是Orbital，買書，的確期待拜讀擊敗James跟The Safekeep的小說。
小說反高潮，沒有危機，沒有衝突，極美的英文，書寫六位太空人在太空站裡的身體與心理，以太空制高點，審視地球的哀愁與光輝與皺摺與挫敗與聖美。
真的不是科幻小說，題材特殊，作者做了很多太空人的研究，細寫他們的心理陰影與光明，詳述太空站的環境。
先說語言。語言真是美。英語的prose很高的境界，用了很多高深的單字（對我來說啦，我程度不高，大家都比我厲害）。我讀英文小說，基本上不查字典，就是繼續讀下去，除非那個字真的不斷出現，或者卡住一切。但這本，很多大段落的描寫，要是沒查那個動詞那個專有名詞那個地理位置，那一整段可能會誤讀，所以我一開始有勤勞查一下字典。但，後半段我也就放棄了，算了。語言很美很美，節奏優雅，適合朗讀出聲，很多段落思考人類的宗教、婚姻、生死、政治、暖化、掠奪。但我必須老實說，讀到最後，這個「美」，幾乎疲乏。
很難翻譯的語言。看台灣哪位高手挑戰。
再說故事。沒有所謂「主角」。若真是有，就是六位太空人，與地球，還有太平洋上的颱風。作者寫了六位太空人的來歷，最動人的，就是日本籍的女性太空人Chie，她剛剛得知，母親過世了。Chie的故事有趣，不過，其實也沒有深入，就是以冷淡的優美文字，寫她的過往與喪母。Chie喜歡羅列喜愛憎恨的事物，小說最後，這個列名字的習慣，有個近乎邪惡的轉折，不過，就是很清淡。這個轉折，是我最喜歡的小小twist。
窒息的空間裡，太空人怎麼睡覺怎麼哭泣怎麼分享空間怎麼做夢，作者用想像力，進入了太空人的身體與夢境。
故事真的在軌道上無止盡的上升下降盤旋，讀到最後好暈好累，沒有開始，沒有結束的那種滑行，的確有進入一種無重力的漂浮閱讀情境。沒有危機，地球就是我們的危機，沒有衝突，地球就是我們的衝突，沒有和解，因為，說不定，根本沒有和解。
小說透過太空人眼睛，審視了很多很多地名、國家、地理環境。我讀著讀著，心裡想，媽啊，作者大人，應該該寫到台灣了吧，哼，怎麼可以忽略我們？好啦，第57頁，終於出現Taiwan。我讀到這邊真是笑自己，幹嘛這麼小心眼。
我自己很愛James跟The Safekeep的故事，那完全就是我的菜。這本美文迴旋，讀完好暈。她寫的那些太空人，一進入無重力空間，一開始會很想吐。我讀完也躺在客廳的瑜珈墊上，好暈喔。
頁數不多，但翻譯難度很高。我就不相信，你們大家愛死的AI，每天都用的AI，有辦法把Samantha Harvey的語言精準翻譯，她的斷句，她的繞圈，她的美，需要人類高手拆解。
