Journalist Bill Moyers was born Billy Don Moyers in Hugo, Oklahoma on this day in 1934.
"Money has robbed the middle class and the working poor of representation—and as they became weaker politically, they are even more insecure in their jobs, their savings, and their future."
--from MOYERS ON AMERICA: A Journalist and His Times (2004)
During the fifty years he has been variously a reporter, a political spokesperson, and a broadcaster, Bill Moyers has demonstrated a deep commitment to understanding the workings of our government and the role of the individual in society. His essays and commentaries, such as the recent “Shivers Down the Spine,” “A Time for Anger,” and “Journalism Under Fire,” are argued over and passed along as soon as they appear in print or on the Internet. Identifying what he sees as a political system increasingly at the mercy of a corporate ruling class, he urges a reengagement with the spirit of community that makes the work of democracy possible. Not only a trenchant critique of what is wrong, Moyers on America is also a call to arms for the progressive promise of the people of America, in whom his faith is strong. We want you to know in advance that starting July 15,BillMoyers.com will no longer be taking comments on posts. It’s a painful decision for us but necessary at this time.

ill rely on it as a trusted source of information. But we need to think through how to reshape our efforts consistent with modest resources and the changing digital landscape. Unfortunately, during this period of exploration we don’t have the budget to moderate comments. We will discontinue the practice starting July 15, although all previous comments will be archived and available.

All of us here — our writers, producers, and editors (Bill included) — have had a blast keeping up with the comments you have posted here at BillMoyers.com over the past three-and-a-half years. Bill has been a faithful reader — based on his early morning ripostes to us he seems to have read every one — and he and the team have appreciated your contribution to the spirited debate often inspired by them (even when we have had to duck for cover!)

So it is with some regret that we archive old comments and shut down our comment boards. We hope that you will continue to respond to our work here on our Facebook page, via Twitter and on other forms of social media.

The conversation of our democracy even at its most raucous is crucial to our success as a nation. And in our eyes that conversation often begins with you. Keep speaking your mind and taking action to make our democracy work!

Bill Moyers and mythologist Joseph Campbell begin their groundbreaking and timeless conversation with an exploration of the classic hero cycle, including consistent and enduring hero patterns in literature, real life and even the Star Wars films. Campbell also encourages the audience to view parts of their own lives as heroic journeys. In a clip from the first episode, Campbell encourages the audience to discover what excites them, and make that the basis for their personal journeys.
Released in 1988, The Power of Myth was one of the most popular TV series in the history of public television, and continues to inspire new audiences.

Read the full transcript of the episode, which we recently transcribed for the web, in which the two discuss commonalities in every culture that create a need for God, and the symbolism of circles in life and literature.

"Follow your bliss ."By Joseph John Campbell
