Ugetsu (1953) is a classic Japanese film directed by Kenji Mizoguchi, based on Ueda Akinari’s 18th-century supernatural tales and Guy de Maupassant’s short stories. Set during the late 16th-century civil wars, it follows two ambitious men whose greed and desires lead them and their families to tragedy.
Genjurō, a potter, dreams of wealth, while his friend Tōbei longs to become a samurai. When their village is caught in the chaos of war, they travel to a city to sell pottery. Genjurō meets Lady Wakasa, a mysterious noblewoman, and is seduced into staying with her, unaware that she is a ghost. Meanwhile, Tōbei abandons his wife to pursue his samurai ambitions, eventually acquiring armor and a false reputation as a warrior.
Genjurō discovers the truth about Lady Wakasa and barely escapes her spirit’s grasp, returning home to find that his wife, Miyagi, was killed by soldiers. Tōbei, having gained fleeting success, realizes his wife, Ohama, has been forced into prostitution. Devastated, he vows to reform.
Mizoguchi’s direction, with his signature long takes and fluid camera movements, enhances the film’s poetic and dreamlike atmosphere. The blending of realism and the supernatural underscores themes of ambition, illusion, and human folly. The film critiques the destructive nature of war and unchecked ambition, showing how people’s desires blind them to reality.
Ugetsu remains one of cinema’s greatest achievements, praised for its haunting beauty, emotional depth, and subtle feminist themes. It won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival and influenced filmmakers worldwide. Its ghostly elegance and tragic storytelling make it an enduring masterpiece of Japanese cinema.
